My co-workers and I will be making a video to promote our book drives for the local schools. I asked another co-worker who just finished making 5 videos for school what program he used. He told me that he bought his for around $50. I can't afford that just to do one video. Are there any good video editing programs that are free?

I haven't personally used any free programs (because I bought my own package) but I hear that Windows Live Movie Maker is good.
Adobe also offers cloud membership access to its full suite of editing programs for $20/month for students & teachers and $30/month for others. Pay for however long you need access to it.
