What age do you think is ok for girls to wear makeup?

Just a little debate between me & my older sister. Ok- I only have boys & she has girls. I've been a single Mom since day 1, she however has been with her kids father since forever so that also changes things. I started wearing makeup right before I turned 14, just gloss, mascara, & some light foundation, but once I was 15, I started wearing shadows & liner which were still natural colors. Her & her kids father don't want there (early) teen daughters any makeup until after high school. They also won't allow them to wear "spaghetti" strap shirts, even in the summer. They also won't allow the girls to shave, & in middle school I think its ok, the girls have long underarm hair too. I think they are way too hard on the girls. I know I don't have daughters yet but I would let mine wear makeup as long as I preapproved it. Thoughts?

  • I don't have an issue with a little makeup in middle school. In high school...whatever she wants when we're not together—I would much rather have my DD express her individuality through her appearance than through acting out in a potentially dangerous manner. I certainly wouldn't want my elementary-school kid wielding a razor, but after that. I don't see WHAT the issue is with spaghetti straps. I mean, I don't wear them as an adult because I'd have to wear a strapless bra (OUCH), but if you don't have gazongas...

  • Shaving should be allowed as soon as the girl feels self conscious about it. Why should any girl NOT be allowed to feel better about herself? Makeup, the same. What is wrong with a little lip gloss, eye shadow or blush even? I've never understood that stuff. I'm all for anything to make little girls feel better about themselves. You all remember how tough it is to be a little girl, correct?!

  • Junior high/middle school for makeup. Nothing crazy, though. Shaving should be allowed as soon as hair becomes an issue. I think its cruel to not let them shave their armpits.

  • I let my daughter wear makeup around 12...
she never wanted to wear anything I found too revealing or anything- so we never had the issue
shaving is something I allowed as soon as she wanted -because I had a mom who did not allow me to shave above the knee until high school...talk about EMBARRASSING- especially in PE when we had to wear shorts...

  • Jr. High. I don't mind a natural look, maybe in high school a little bit more not sure until I cross that bridge. My dds wear spaghetti straps now. And as for shaving armpits as soon as The start getting hair. I think that's gross and embarrassing IMO.

  • as they asked we discussed and allowed what we felt was appropriate at that time. One wanted make up at 11 SOOOO, we bought avon that hardly even showed up but because she applied it she felt better about herself. We did hightlights no earlier than 12, they shaved legs when they started having to dress out at gym because they asked.

My years growing up on the other hand wasn Makeup was a MUST, hair perfect always and shaving etc by 12 no questions asked you do it! Were not allowed downstairs until make up and hair were done and we were completly dressed. I now hate make up and could give 2 shits about hair!

  • I had to shave my underarms at 10, shaved legs at 12, and wore makeup at 13...Just a little... And I was from a very strict Christian home...The hair was a neccesity.

  • No, makeup...it's too early and they have to keep their skin healthy until they turn like me when you HAVE to wear it
