How much money would you expect to pay for a good, reliable used car?

3500? less? more?

  • Go to KellyBlueBook.com and do a little research on what you can afford. That's what I did.

  • It depends on what type of car you want. Small 10 year old economy car is going to be a lot less than a large 2 year old suv. The last used car we bought was 13K, but it's a ford excursion in excellent condition. The one we bought before that was a $1500 10 year old wagon that I dearly loved, it's just not big enough with 5 kids.
Also depends on how handy you are. My husband can keep anything running and is extremely knowledgeable about cars so we can probably get by with a lot less than most people. He actually prefers older cars with less electronic stuff and more basic mechanics - easier to work on!

  • My minivan was $3800, but I knew it needed expensive work to be able to have air conditioning, so I factored that into my decision. Other than the air conditioning (which was a thousand dollar expense), I haven't had to put a dime into it in the 3.5 years I've had it.

  • It really depends on what you want, how old it is and how many miles it has. My 05 Jeep set me back 10k but it's in awesome shape and less than half what they cost new.

  • Really? Although I guess it would be another $600 for sales tax and probably another $600 for destination fee on that $7,000. I guess we haven't driven anything other than minivans or SUVs for too many years. The least we've paid for a used vehicle is $9,500 for my husband's.
