What exactly am I, an atheist, "missing" about religion?

I mean, specifically what do you know about me and my beliefs, that you can declare that I am indeed "missing it"?
Please do enlighten me if you care to be so bold.
Especially since I was raised in the church.

  • I do not think you are missing nothing. Religion is for people who need something to believe in.  I would rather believe in martians.

  • I say to each his own. For ME, life without my religion would be missing direction and meaning. But that's me.
I would never presume that just because it's inspiring and uplifting for me it should be for everyone. We all find that in different ways.

  • I think it's obvious that when you choose one path, you automatically exclude yourself from other paths. That's just common sense. I've chosen one specific belief system that works for me. And while I'm aware of others, can talk about them, and know their history, I don't experience them personally. So I'm very willingly missing out on their beliefs, rituals, etc even tho I really admire some of them. But I can't be two or three things at once...I've chosen to be one.

  • Who's to say you're missing anything? You were exposed to the religion of whatever church you were raised in and decided it wasn't for you. If that works for you, then by all means, stick to your guns. If not, educate yourself about other belief systems that might suit you better. The problem comes in when someone of one belief system tries to talk others out of theirs, or looks down on other people considered less intelligent or more ignorant because they choose to follow a faith that suits them.

  • I think your eyes are closed to what you are missing.

    Matthew 13:12-15 NLT
12 To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given, and they will have an abundance of knowledge. But for those who are not listening, even what little understanding they have will be taken away from them. 13 That is why I use these parables,

For they look, but they don’t really see.
They hear, but they don’t really listen or understand.
14 This fulfills the prophecy of Isaiah that says,

‘When you hear what I say,
    you will not understand.
When you see what I do,
    you will not comprehend.
15 For the hearts of these people are hardened,
    and their ears cannot hear,
and they have closed their eyes—
    so their eyes cannot see,
    and their ears cannot hear,
    and their hearts cannot understand,
and they cannot turn to me
    and let me heal them.’[a]
