Missing tax return money

we got our state tax return last week and it was less than what Turbo Tax said our return would be. we paid for Turbo Tax outright so they didnt take anything from it and we dont owe anything to anyone, no unpaid tickets or anything like that...so does anyone know who we would contact to get this resolved? im trying all angles before i have to start calling random offices at the Tax Commission office...i hate talking to ppl over the phone.

  • I'd think you'd need to get an explanation from the state tax commission where you live.

  • There might have been some sort of lien against your tax return, you'll probably get documentation in the mail soon but it might be easier to call and start asking. DH's student loans were defaulted a couple years ago and they took almost all our federal return AND our (very small) state return, we were kinda pissed about the state return though because they told us everything came out of our federal one. we never saw that money again though so even if it was a mistake we got nothing back :P

  • Did you owe some from last year ? Do you have any garnishments etc? Did you owe the IRS money from last year? How much is it short? if it is in the 25-35% range I am guessing you have some type of old debt They should be able to explain where the money went as soon as you call them

  • Have you been through your mail carefully? Sometimes they will send you a notice saying "your return was off by xx amount due to _______, we have deducted this from your return. If you wish to appeal, you have xx days to call ________" or something to that affect.
