  • ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity dorder) does not go away in adults, but sometimes people have the skills to cope with it better as they get older. Mental retardation doesn't go away at all.

  • Some people allegedly outgrow ADHD as they get older, but from what I've seen (both my kids have it, their father had it, several of my cousins have it), it's not really that they "outgrow" it as that they have learned some coping skills that aren't necessarily obvious to others and therefore it looks like they no longer have it when really they just have it under control.

If you're counting on someone outgrowing it - don't. If they're an adult and still showing obvious signs of it, the only option is meds or behavioral changes. If your kid has it, learn more about it so you can prepare them to deal with it for the rest of their lives.
