Switching up DirecTV Receivers

We are upgrading to the Genie through DirecTV next week. We currently have an HD DVR through them and have shows and movies saved. I can only figure that these are saved in the box (and not somewhere off in satellite-land), but I would hate to lose them. Anyone know if there is a way they (or we) can transfer from the old receiver to the new?

  • I don't think you can. I remember a while ago my DH was going to get new receivers but he didn't for that reason. I haven't called Dish to ask recently though.

  • Call & ask.

I did, but got tired of holding for a customer service rep. Wish I would have remembered to ask when we ordered the upgrade yesterday.

  • you can't transfer them. They've said you can buy an external hard-drive (like extra memory) and transfer to that. I haven't done it so I'm not sure how. If you send the old box back, you'll be sending your shows with it.

  • ok- got the low down.
you need a dvd player/ burner
you connect the DVR to the burner and then record them to DVD
