"They can quit when the time comes"...since when has any federal mandate allowed that to happen?

At a Loss on Refusing Medicaid Cash

Article makes the argument that states considering refusing any medicaid expansion programs under Obamacare are being silly, because it's guaranteed paid for 3 years, and after that, they can choose to opt out if they want.

How exactly is that supposed to work?

  • A state expands its medicaid to include all uninsured people who don't make enough to qualify for federal subsidies. All those uninsured people now have insurance and cannot be prosecuted or fined for every month they are uninsured at tax time.

  • Year 4, federal government cuts funding to the state (as the law is written - automatic funding reduction in year 4 for all states)

  • State cuts the medicaid expansion program and goes back to it's 2012 criteria - millions of people lose their insurance overnight, are not allowed, under federal law, to get any federal subsidy to pay for insurance

  • Those who cannot afford an individual (family) plan of their own will be fined on their tax return for every month they go without.

  • If they cant afford to pay that fine, they will be prosecuted for tax evasion, facing thousands more in penalties, even prison if they can't come up with the money.

So how on earth will states possibly be able to opt out of those programs once they're put in place?

  • They won't be able to. The only option will eventually be to go to single payer. It's what they were after all along.

  • Wouldn't you love for these idiots to be stuck on Obamacare and then go bankrupt so that they don't have the money to have insurance and have to pay fines or go to jail. Just what the economy needs.
