  • child 1-2 is pretty young
you can start with making a game
also the easy stuff to clean up first- like all stuffed animals in a basket

  • If he's still a little guy, start by not letting him drag out everything he owns at once, because then picking up is overwhelming. Also, be sure there's a place for everything. If he has more toys than places to put them, it will be a losing battle from the start.

  • Teach him to only get out one toy at a time. It involves work and will take time and possibly a few tantrums but you will be rewarded when your 3 yo willingly picks up his toys without being asked, because its routine.

  • Clean up time songs etc, and only allowing him to get a few things out at a time, instead of a room full of toys, so they understand that they have to put back the toys they are currently playing with to be able to get others out, it doesn't take long for them to catch on

  • You have to teach kids how to clean. Show them by helping them clean. How did you learn how to do something? By someone showing you how to do it. Right?

  • don't make it sound like it is work. Make it fun and do it with them, See who is faster, sing a song, count things as you put them away. Slowly but surely they will get it, make a big deal out of it, when they put something away. (some them it is a good thing to pick up) My 2.5yr old now picks up her toys and sings a clean up song. sometimes she makes it up, sometimes she sings what she was taught. At 2 it is important that you make sure to not make a big deal if it isn't picked up or put away right. As long as they are starting to HELP be happy and say thank you. Good Praise, will make them want to do it more. You can always fix it later.
