Any tricks to keep apple slices from browning?

I have to pack a lunch for my son everyday now and he loves apples but will only eat them sliced and peeled. I found presliced and peeled packs of them but at a buck a piece that will begin to add up. If I slice and peel them on my own are there any tricks to keep them from browning in his lunch box?

  • Fill a bowl with cold water and add a teaspoon of lemon juice as you slice the apples drop them in the bowl of acidulated water. Take them out and lay them on a paper towel then place in zip loc bag.

  • I don't know about if you peel them, but if you cut the apple, then put it back together and wrap a rubberband around it, it will keep the insides fresh. You can even put peanut butter where the core goes

  • A little bit of lemon juice, and some varieties tend to brown less. I'd have to do a little digging to find out which one, though.

  • Lemon juice helps if you brush it on right after slicing them.

I am using chrome, so I can't make it clicky.

They mentioned that the more sour the apple = less browning ie: granny smiths are a good choice

Also adding powdered vitamin c will stop browning available at canning supply stores or pharmacies.

  • "Does it make the apples sour? "

No it doesn't. At least I've never been able to tell. I do it for my youngest and she never notices. You can try booklover's suggestion of diluting the lemon juice in water. I've never tried that, but it would definitely cut down on the possibility of the apples tasting sour.
