Is all the betting on the Pope a sin?

Everywhere on earth that has legal gambling is running odds on who the new pope will be, when the smoke will show up, how many votes before they decide, etc etc.

  • Well, Catholics don't consider gambling itself to be a sin, that's the Baptists. So, I guess that's the "loophole".

  • Catholics do not concider gambling a sin?

Most Catholic churches have bingo night, some do full blown casino nights. They don't have an issue with drinking either. It's not the gambling itself that would an issue so much as gambling on who the pope will be and how he'll get there - the entire process is supposed to be divinely guided.

  • My only bet is that it's an archaic tradition for an anachronistic group of stodgy old men.

  • Nope no cammandments against it or traditions either. Things that come with it can be sins, such as gambling to excess and putting your family in harms way, The addiction to gambling can become as a god to you,

  • The subject of the gamble doesn't make a difference. It doesn't influence how the Cardinals will vote. Nope, not a sin.
