Ive been out of school too long... i need to figure out how to deduct the percentage out of something

if you want to figure out how much you'll have left after 2.5% is taken from something, how do you apply the percentage to the original figure? do you simply subtract 2.5% from the number? gah i feel stupid but i was always horrible at percentages & fractions...

  • Multiply the amount by .025 to find out what 2.5% is then subtract that amount from the original.

  • Either way works it just depends on which method you find is "easier".

  • Or you can subtract 1-0.025 = .975. Multiply that by your original figure.

Kristi, you can't divide by 1.025. That's the same as multiplying by .9756098. Too high.
