Surrogate offered $10,000 to abort.

This story is crazy.  Which side do you think was in the right?

  • i read this story an hour ago but had to gather my thoughts before i could answer. lot of craziness here.

the biggest part of me is saying, having someone else carry your child, regardless of contracts, comes with risks. essentially that person is renting out their body to you but it is still their body. i dont believe surrogate mothers should be forced into abortion, i think it should still come down to 'her body, her choice', and if she chooses not to, then she should obviously be responsible for the child and the medical costs up until delivery and after that.

i think it is shameful that the bio parents wanted to hand the child over to the state, that is deplorable. i highly doubt that if the bio mother had been carrying the child herself, that she would have even considered that as an option. and it was easy for her to tell another lady to abort her child because she's not the one that has to physically endure it.

  • The "parents" of that baby should be ashamed. I'm glad the surrogate didn't do it.

  • I can fully understand the "bio" parents reaction. But, putting a price on it, then saying "if you dont, I'll be a total shit to this kid and put her in the foster care system", makes my skin crawl. I dont care what "contract" I signed, there is no way I would undergo a medical procedure I didnt agree with. It is still "my choice my body" no matter what the outside influences are.

  • I think abortion is wrong, but the surrogate did sign an agreement to terminate under certain circumstances. I am glad the baby was born and has a loving family.

  • What a sad story! There are a lot of complicated issues, but I'm glad the surrogate decided to give the baby a chance at life. The part I don't understand is the biological parents wanting to take custody of the child and then surrender her to the state foster care system.

  • I think in the end the only one who will suffer is the child. Its a shame they could get together to make this life but not see its value now. Too bad.

  • Seems rather hypocritical to me thatshe had no issues "playing God" by renting out her uterus but has since decided that her moral convictions won't allow her to terminate for under $15,000.(Funny how those convictions have a price tag attached). In this case I side with the biological couple in that if the surrogate won't abort as requested then she is to be responsible for the raising of said child. .
Now granted I am pro-choice and the whole "her body her choice" thing comes into play but the issue here is that she is essentially renting out her body to the couple for a price. Now regardless of whether the couple decided to abort later I feel the surrgoate is entitled to the full fee as originally outlined for the surrogacy as it is not anyone's "fault" that the child is developing abnormally.(It's genetic which means it would have been the fault of the bio parents in any case). cont...

  • Now as for the surrogate, unless she can prove that an abortion would somehow damage her body making her incapable of carrying another child I don't think it's her position to deny the biological parents their wish. I can potentially see a fee for the complication of the proceedure and recovery but it should all be medically related.
