Disappearing earache?

My five-year-old woke up with an earache last night. It seemed pretty bad, but she finally fell asleep next to me after having some Tylenol and a warm washcloth laid on her ear. I was all set to take her to the pediatrician first thing this morning, thinking she'd need antibiotics like she's had before, but she woke up just fine. She said her ear didn't hurt at all, and she barely remembered it hurting from last night. She has a well checkup on Friday, so I'll ask at that appointment, but has anybody ever seen this before? What could cause an earache that goes away overnight?

  • Maybe sinus drainage. At that age, their ear tubes/canals are straight & not curved, so anything draining can go straight to their ears. Glad she has the appt. And that she's feeling better today. :)

  • Sounds to me like you relieved the pressure with the washcloth. Earaches tend to come on quick, so sometimes they seem to go quick when there is no infection involved. It's handy you have an appointment coming up anyway, so they can take a look just to be sure.

  • Maybe she slept on it wrong. Sometimes my pillow gets bunched up & I wake up with a sore ear.

  • I get that alot if my sinuses are clogged and I get them to drain using a netti pot.
