6 year old texting?!

lol.. do you let your children text? my 6 year old occasionally texts with my mom. i think its a pretty awesome way for her to keep up with reading and spelling. obviously she still reads actual books, this is just an extra fun thing that she enjoys doing with my mom, and i am always sitting next to her.

  • My son is 10. I prefer for him to talk to people over chatting or texting. Also I encourage him to write letters, make cards for family members. he likes receiving the mail back.

  • My 11 yo dd texts all the time! My 13 yo ds texts as well, but to a much lesser extent. I love that it's a quick and easy way for them to contact me during the day (yes, sometimes in between classes they will send me a text - if they need to stay after school, want to have a friend over, etc.) and it's a good way for them to contact me when they are at their dad's house without him knowing and getting bent out of shape.
I would have no problem with my younger ones texting once they learn to read and write, as long as they are texting someone they know (ie family members)

  • I have let them text my mom and let DD text one of her friends that we moved away from, but that's it.

  • My DD would just text her name to people and that's it. She's been doing it since she was 4

  • No. I personally do not agree with cell phones for children who are not even teens yet. Even then I do not think cell phones, texting, FB and other higher tech tools are appropriate. I am not judging other parents who do, I am just not comfortable with it. My six year old does not have an ipad or any tablet. I certainly do not want him texting. My preference is to hold off as long as possible.
