The word of God doesn't work that way

So, I'm scrolling through Tumblr - looking at abandoned places- minding my own business and this comes along:

*nice...

  • Well, there's some truth to that, mainly the invention & interpretation of "God" by man will not allow true peace.

  • As Nimue notes, the Word of God has to do with loving each other. Coexistence is the highest level of that love! Those who cannot coexist don't love.

It also says Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.

Either you believe it all or you believe none.  Hunt and peck, agreeing with the lovey dovey bits and ignoring the totalitarian ones is disingenuous.

  • Some people! I went to church today, and the minister read off 50 different commands of Jesus found throughout the New Testament... They all have to do with loving each other in some way .... So I guess whoever made that sign, doesn't read the NT... Lol

  • Actually the Word of God does work EXACTLY that way. It's just that too many people think the Word of God actually means "the words of God." (Literalism vs allegory.)

I think it's all about understanding WHY certain bits were written. Seeing as it was a book written by man, and a product of its time, I think it's important to understand that the Bible does reflect that It all comes down to how you interpret it. For just one example, is the threat of hell really a valid one, or a valid criticism, when none of the words translated to hell MEAN a literal, physical place of torment? Perhaps there needs to be a higher standard of interpretation, instead of people just accepting the lowest common denominator as "mainstream" and all...

  • Just because each thinks the others are wrong doesnt mean we aren't co existing. Last I checked, each of these religions are still prevalent. The majority of followers in each religion want to live and let live.

  • The majority of followers in each religion want to live and let live.

Except women and children are being tortured and killed by Christians across Africa for being "witches". That's not live and let live. Jews and Muslims have been slaughtering each other for millennia. That's not live and let live. Most of the Middle East and a fifth of Europe have blasphemy laws, where speaking or acting on the "wrong" religion can be punishable by anything from a fine to death.

That's not 500 years ago the Catholics killed the Jews in Spain or 200 years ago the Christian explorers killed the religions of Native Americans, that's today's paper.
