Why don't we call him Francisco?

so i read that the new pope's name is Francis I...but when i was watching it on TV they said Francisco. yes, i know it was in Latin, but why not just call him Pope Francisco? its not like we cant pronounce it correctly or its a word foreign to our vocabulary. i mean his birth name is Jorge and we pronounce it "hore-hey" instead of George...so why dont we call him Francisco?

  • BTW St. Francis is the Patron Saint of Animals, Merchants & Ecology. I have a statue of St. Francis in my garden. He's holding a little bird in his hand & there are woodland animals at his feet.

  • so he chose it based off of St. Francis, and they had to translate the name into Latin for the ceremonial stuff or is it really St. Francisco and we've translated it to English?

  • It's St. Francis of Assisi here in the US. His original name was Giovani & his Father went on a trip to France. He loved France so much that when he came back he renamed his Son Francesco (after the word France). Francis in english, Francesco in Italian. Frank in the Bronx LOL!
