White House Easter Egg Roll Cancelled Because of Sequester Cuts?

Rumors are swirling that sequester cuts could lead to the cancellation of the time-honored White House Easter Egg Roll scheduled for April 1, sparking reactions from a number of Republicans on Monday.

The administration sent invitations to politically-connected families last week, but a memo suggested the event could be cancelled over fiscal considerations.

"By using these tickets, guests are acknowledging that this event is subject to cancellation due to funding uncertainty surrounding the Executive Office of the President and other federal agencies," the White House said in the memo. "If cancelled, the event will not be re-scheduled. We will notify you if there are any modifications to this event."

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, R-Ga., expressed his outrage over the suggestion.

"Shameless! How else can you describe the threat to cancel White House Easter egg hunt? Maybe pathetic, demagogic? You try to find right words," he tweeted.

A White House official who was not authorized to discuss the matter told the Washington Post that the event will probably still happen.

"Because we distribute tickets to the Easter Egg Roll far in advance, we alerted all ticket holders that this event is subject to cancellation due to funding uncertainty, including the possibility of a government shutdown," the official wrote in an e-mail. "However, we are currently proceeding as planned with the Easter Egg Roll."

If it goes off, this year's Easter egg roll will be the 135th. More than 35,000 are expected to attend, joining the first family for games, stories, and the traditional egg hunt, according to Whitehouse.gov.

The uproar over the possible cancellation of the Easter egg roll comes a few weeks after people expressed anger over the administration's cancellation of White House tours.

As a result of the White House tour cancellations, several people like Donald Trump and a few Fox News hosts have offered to donate money so the program can continue.

The White House rejected the offers.

  • If they want to impress us with some REAL cuts, how about pay-cuts for ALL the politicians. Including cuts in ALL their perks. Then I will believe they are sincere about it. They are using the White housetours & the Easter Egg on the lawn as pawns, like parents putting the kids in the middle. They should be ashamed.  And they should've taken Trump's money & applied it to the ever-growing deficit!

White House warns Easter Egg Roll could be canceled
Washington (CNN) - Ticket holders for the upcoming White House Easter Egg Roll are being warned the annual event could be canceled if lawmakers can't agree on a measure funding the federal government.

As for now, the event will go on as planned – though warnings have gone out to members of Congress and ticketholders that a partial government shutdown would cause the egg roll to be scrapped.

In a memo to lawmakers, who receive tickets to the egg roll, the White House notes that "by using these tickets, guests are acknowledging that this event is subject to cancellation due to funding uncertainty surrounding the Executive Office of the President and other federal agencies.".............

  • First you bitch that the white house fiscal funding is too high and needs to be cut, next you're bitching that they are canceling an event due to fiscal concerns. Will you make up your damn mind or does it not matter as long as you can say "Obama is evil" in regards to either one?

  • I'm really kidding. I don't think Obama is a Muslim. It really was a tasteless joke that I'm sure Seth Macfarland or Letterman would've made. lol

  • I could see this as a legitimate cut. You lead by example. Stopping the WH tours was a bad decision because it's the "people's house". Not having frills and events like this isn't going to be that big of a deal. There are plenty of other ridiculous things our governments funding that could have been cut, but they wanted to play politics instead. It's sad that there are no adults in the room.

  • I'm ok with the cut. I'm also ok with the cut of the Blue Angels flying around doing nothing. $20 M a year for non-combat planes to fly around and do flying circus stunts. They should charge tickets and stop making taxpayers pay for that nonsense. The local news said today they are still going to practice whether they fly for events or not so we still have to dish out for their pay and gas so they can play. Kids are starving but people are ok with paying higher taxes so guys can fly around in the sky doing loop d loops. That's shameful.
