1 Bump

Our puppy has thrown up a few times today and wont eat, what can I do to help her tonight before I can take her to the vet tomorrow??

She's 5 months old, and has literally laid on the couch the entire day. Won't eat or drink anything. Last time she threw up was this morning and it was only twice. She pooped only once and that was this morning as well, it was regular poop followed by diarrhea. She lays awkwardly and it looks like shes trying not to lay on her stomach, so im guessing that's whats bothering her. I feel so bad for her and just want to help her before we can get to the vet, is there anything I can do to make her feel better?

  • The key is to make sure she doesnt get dehydrated. Get some plain pedialyte and a baby medicine syringe from the pharmacy. Then give the pup half of a tsp in the cheek. IF it stays down, repeat every 15 minutes for a couple of hours. If it doesn't stay down try in an hour.

Hope your little pup feels better!

  • maybe put some ice cubes in the water dish. Fluids are most important.

  • You can give her Pepto Bysmol. Dogs very strongly dislike the taste of the pink liquid, so either use a syringe and hold a towel over her face in case she spits it out and shakes her head--unless you like splotches of pink on your couch and carpet--or gently open her mouth, put the tablet in, then hold her mouth closed and stroke her throat with slow, sweeping up and down movements till you feel her swallow. You can also put the tablet in a glob of cheese, but if she won't eat, then you're better off making her swallow it. Good luck.

  • This question just gave me flashbacks- do you have Easter decorations laying around?
My friend's dog did the same thing about 10 years ago. He had eaten that plastic Easter grass and it formed a solid ball in his stomach causing a blockage! Symptoms sound identical, and well since Easter is a week away, this is the first thing that comes to mind!

  • OP..if you do give your puppy the pepto, make sure you tell your vet cause it can interfere with any x-rays they may have to take. Also remember to get a poop sample to take in so they can rule out possible viruses and parasites or what kind they may be. Also you can tell if your puppy is dehydrated is to test the elasticity of the skin. Gently pull the skin away from her body in the area of her neck. When the skin is released, it should immediately returny to her body. If there is a delay she may be dehydrated. Ore you can push down on her gums and it turns white back to pink quickly, shes good to go then. You can also give her caned pumpkin if giving her the pepto is too difficult. It help with the diarrhea.
