  • I don't think there is any logic in it at all.

Because the bible tells them so, and back then, nobody was about to speak up and say otherwise, lest they be fired (or not re-elected). The congress that was sitting at that time was riding a serious wave of right wing conservative Christianity, the start of the movement that would eventually bring us the Westboro baptists and idiots in Florida who burn Qurans for media coverage.

The hijacked Tea Party that traded fiscal conservative issues with social conservative ones isn't as new as it might seem - it's really a resurgence of the "moral majority". It's the same mentality that wanted to ban records as Satanic or bad for children because they included non-Christian or sexual imagery.

  • Something else to keep in mind that a lot of people don't realize - as recently as the 2008 campaign - Marriage is one man and one woman was a plank ratified by the Democratic Party, not just the Republicans. Half the registered Dems in the country didn't even realize it, but it was the official stance of both parties that Christian marriage was the definition of all marriage.

  • It was just another knee jerk response to irrational fears. Those don't tend to be grounded in logic.
