Is the word "Homosexual" considered to be derogatory?

I was listening to my favorite radio show today and the host of the show, Lars Larson, was interviewing a gay woman. Whenever he would ask her questions and use the word homosexual, she corrected him and said it was derogatory.
She said the word repulsed her. He asked her what word he should say and she said, use the word "Gay" not "Homosexual.
I was just as surprised as he was and did not realize this. Have you heard this?

  • But with that being said... she was offended by it and told him so, he shouldn't have continued to use the term

  • I have a lot of gay friends, and I've never heard of that being derogatory. But some people are more sensitive to labels than others.

  • The word gay actually means to be happy or joyful.
Homosexual is more acurate. I do not see how that is derogatory.
I can see how the derivative "homo" is derrogatory because it always has been used in the manner.
I am not disgusted by beeing called heterosexual.

  • I always thought it was a neutral word, but a lot of it probably depends on tone. I know many do prefer the word gay.

  • really?! ive never heard that before. i consider homosexual to the be same as heterosexual...the more scientific-ish term to describe a person who is attracted to a person of the same gender. how strange...
