When should I say something?

I recently got a new job and my first day is April 15. Last week, I found out I am unexpectedly expecting. When should I say something to my new employer? Should I let them know before I start or do I wait a couple of weeks? I don't want to seem like I am trying to pull a fast one on the new job, but I don't want to give them a reason to change their minds about hiring me. Any advice?

  • I would not say anything. We have hired people at my job, than months later when they start showing we know they are pregnant.

  • It is pretty common to wait until your 2nd trimester. Since the majority of miscarriages happen during the 1st, many prefer not to have to share that sad news with people they don't know well at work.

  • When I got pregnant with my oldest, I'd already been at my job for about 6 months (well, when I found out). I waited until I was into my second trimester before I said anything. So I would definitely wait at least that long at a brand new job. You have no real obligation to tell them right now anyway. Wait until you're settled into the job, know what you're doing, know it's going to stick, and then in your second trimester, you can tell them.

  • I would wait until you are farther along and possibly not untill you are showing UNLESS the job you are taking could endager your baby or being pregnant for some reason would make you do a poor job. Most jobs you can do while you are pregnant with little problems.
