Is the peanut butter necessary?

Chocolate Oatmeal No Bake Cookies
1/2 C Butter
2 C Sugar
1/2 C Milk
4 Tbsp Cocoa
1/2 C Peanut Butter
3 1/2 C Quick cooking Oats
2 tsp. Vanilla
Add the first 4 ingredients in a saucepan. Bring to a rolling boil, and boil for 1 minute. Stir in the next 3 ingredients and drop onto wax/foil paper. Let cool until set.

just found this recipe. in the picture they almost resemble Star Crunch cookies from little debbie but those have rice krispies in them instead of oatmeal. i really dont want a peanutty taste though, but im guessing thats probably the glue that holds them together. what do you think?

  • I would make a half batch with and a half batch without and see which you lie better and how the non peanut butter ones turn out!

  • sunflower butter is a good choice to. I think it will be necessary for binding...

  • bake cookies/boiled cookies are AWESOME. FWIW, they aren't really that peanut buttery.

Answer by mommy_jules at 3:56 PM on Apr. 4, 2013

  • I make those a lot. I'd be worried that the cookies would just crumble apart without the peanut butter. But they don't taste very strongly of peanuts anyway. If you do try leaving out the peanut butter, just be sure to get the other ingredients to a hard rolling boil and keep them that way a little longer than the recipe says, since the boiling also helps everything stick together. Test out a half recipe first.

  • Perhaps some marshmellow creme as it has started to cool?

Answer by baconbits at 4:14 PM on Apr. 4, 2013

  • Yes, the peanut butter is the glue. You could find something else to glue it together.

Answer by louise2 at 4:45 PM on Apr. 4, 2013

  • Yeah, the peanut butter sounds like the binder for the whole thing, what will give it the perfect consistency. You could try making a batch without it, or find a substitute, like cashew butter

I know there are others without peanut butter though.
