Well in 2 more weeks my friend will be off shipped to Afghanistan and don't know when he will be back so today we are having a dinner for him and his girlfriend burned all the food so does anyone have any ideas on what to cook for him?

Here is another. I recommend looking at the reviews to get extra practical advise.
for marinara, I would sauté the onion and garlic in olive oil (don't cook the garlic as long or it will turn bitter if it is overcooked), add tomato and basil, add salt and pepper and simmer. That will make a good basic marinara.

When my oldest is deployed along with his friends from college...he was in a military program...they craved before and after regional cooking. We are in Texas so Tex-Mex.He has said the large FOB's do a decent job with ok meals ,the MRE's are what they are...nutrition but he really missed Tex-Mex ,guys from La...Cajun stuff etc.So maybe a regional food. The only thing he still can't stomach is Asparagus ,on one of his deployments the FOB had a warehouse full of canned Asparagus.
Can't wait for your friend to return safely home.
