Why do people admit to criminal activity on the internet?

Whether it's drug use, illegal immigration status, cheating on taxes, whatever. Even if they think they are too insignificant to warrant a police investigation over it, it's still there when someone does a background check on them for whatever reason. Their IP address (which is essentially the same as a home address these days) and the content will ALWAYS be there, even if it's "deleted".

Is it bravery or stupidity?

  • Straight up stupidity. I'm still amazed by how any people just post their FB rants "public". In this day & age, average people (not even investigators) can find out private stuff. And, people are just complete morons for making their jobs even easier.

  • Cockiness. They gotta brag to their friends to prove how "smart" they are to get away with whatever they did.

  • I would call it more ignorance than stupidity. Not understanding how the Net works, not understanding that deleted information never goes away.

  • It's a combo of stupidity, cockiness, and not understanding that the internet is forever...

  • I think it is a bravado that is based in stupidity. They believe that they are anonymous and can not ever get caught, so they brag to the only people they can that can't turn them in.
