Will your property taxes go up if you put up a fence?

We are looking to buy a house, the taxes on the house that we are thinking about are 2200 a year, and we were wondering if we fenced in our back yard if our taxes would go up and how much

  • No, i dont think so otherwise there would be lots of homes without fences. Having a fence will increase the value of your home not your taxes. Ask your real estate agent to make sure. Real estate taxes normally goes up every year anyways.

  • It shouldn't unless the fence somehow increases the value. IN some states (CA is one) your property tax is 1% of the selling price and goes up a set amount every year, no more than that.

  • The first responder is correct-you will increase your homes value, as fenced properties are more desirable.

Property taxes are generally determined by your school district and infrastructure (police, fire, emergency and government, etc.).

Now, if you make a major improvement to your home, such as an addition,or a finished basement that COULD be used as a separate apartment (full bath, kitchen, etc.), then your taxes WILL go up, as your homes value will go up. However, home tax assessors don't come around that often, so you'll likely see tax assessments in the form of property taxes.
