Man Survives Empire State Building Jump

You don't expect a story that begins "man jumps off Empire State Building" to end well. But a Massachusetts tourist has been given a second chance after his suicide attempt—in which he climbed a fence lining the building's 86th floor observation deck just before midnight Wednesday and jumped off—was interrupted by the 85th floor. The 33-year-old landed one floor down and was taken to Bellevue with a broken ankle. The New York Post reports that he faces charges of reckless endangerment, trespassing, and disorderly conduct.

So instead of get him mental help we charge him and throw him in jail....

  • Most people with mental illness issues end up in jail. There isnt' any place else to put them. A few years ago, NAMI released the following stat:
"U.S. Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) showing than 64 percent of local jail inmates, 56 percent of state prisoners and 45 percent of federal prisoners have symptoms of serious mental illnesses."

Im sure it hasn't gotten any better.

  • How sad. That just isn't right. Hopefully the courts will sentence him to some kind of mental health facility.

  • There was a story awhile back, and I am trying to find it, but, a guy tried to kill himself did not succeed, and was punished and was charged with attempted murder! BTW, this was not here in the US. Go figure... :)

  • Yeah, I was reading that and breathing a sigh of relief till I got to the part about the charges. WTF? Now let's add to the guy's problems by dropping a couple of stupid misdemeanors in his lap.
