We are doing Disney in a few weeks. Suggestions on how to announce it to the kids?

We are going to Disney very soon and decided not the tell the kids right away. We have a family meeting every Sunday at breakfast and was thinking of telling them this upcoming Sunday (5/12). Oh, crap, it's Mother's day. We may wait until the following Sunday. Regardless, any suggestions? We have 5 kids, ages 13,7,4,2, and 1.

  • I don't know if it's part of a package or what, but look into this, my friend took her kids a few months ago, and they didn't tell the kids until they were about an hour away from the park, and Mater from Carsland called and told the kids they were going to Disney (through the blue tooth in the car ya know)

  • My boyfriend has always had this thing with his older kids, and now with our daughter, where he doesn't tell them where we're going on a surprise till we get there. They love trying to guess. Not sure if it would work for something as big as a trip to Disney, but it's fun.

  • We love surprising the kids like this. One time when we went to Knotts, we didn't tell them at all. We woke them up at 4 am and told them that daddy needed help at work (they do this sometimes). We got in the car and started driving. We drove 4 hours and they saw the big tower at Knotts in the distance. They got all excited, and we said forget work, let's have a little vacation instead.

  • We were thinking of waiting until the day of but that means we have to pack for all 5 kids without them knowing. That will be hard. We are there for 4 days, then spending another 3 visiting family who lives near there. Also, we want the school aged kids to know before school ends so they can tell their teacher or friends about it when asked "what are you doing this summer?" We haven't been on a family vacation in about 6 years and it will be nice to give them something else to say besides they are going to the zoo or park.

We are going this year and not waiting because 1. We haven't been on vacation in a really long time. 2. We are obligated to visiting family this year. DH's grandmother made us promise to visit because she can no longer travel. Also, DH's cousin is pregnant and due the same time as me and I want to see her. We don't see each other except on Thankgiving. Both babies will be born by then.

  • Could you make it a game- and give clues? Whatever you decide to do, hope you all have a great time & great weather :)

  • We took our kids on a Disney cruise and kept it as a surprise for a WHOLE YEAR! It was so hard!!

The kids knew we were going somewhere, we asked them where they wanted to go and they made up a place and all these things they wanted to do there. We neither confirmed nor denied their plans, we just let them plan. Then we got in the car and started driving. The kids were so involved in their reading and game playing that they literally didn't look up until the giant cruise ship was in front of us. We had to ask them to look out the window.

They freaked out! It was awesome!!

  • We announced today! It was perfect. We had a scavenger hunt with each letter from Disney as the finds. Then they brought the letters to the table and tried to unscramble them to find the word. Once the word was out, we showed them a DVD of all the fun things to do at Disney and which resort we are staying. After seeing that, they were really excited. Then we gave them luggage tags to announce we were flying there. They assumed we would drive because we are one state away, but we got a great deal on plane tickets so we are doing that instead. Yes, we will be that family, with all the kids (and babies) on the plane. It's only a 1.5hr trip though. We are all so excited!
