Change the age of consent from 16 to 13(in UK) to protect old men??

A British Lawyer(Barbara Hewson) wants the age of consent to be lowered to 13 as it would prevent the "unjust" prosecution of Older men. She talks in particular about two men, Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons, and actor Savile. She states that Savile fondling of underage girls(reaching up their skirts, grabbing their breasts and other sexual advances) were nothing to be concerned about. That he shouldn't be punished. She proposes that, "It’s time to end this prurient charade, which has nothing to do with justice or the public interest. Adults and law-enforcement agencies must stop fetishising victimhood. Instead, we should focus on arming today’s youngsters with the savoir-faire and social skills to avoid drifting into compromising situations, and prosecute modern crime. As for law reform, now regrettably necessary, my recommendations are: remove complainant anonymity; introduce a strict statute of limitations for criminal prosecutions and civil actions; and reduce the age of consent to 13." So not only shall we lower the age of consent but no woman or child should be able to keep any anonymity in the Press. She also refers to his pursuit of young girls as a Fetish...instead of Pedophilia. My husband wrote and interesting piece as well about the push in America(from the Liberal left) to designate Pedophilia as a lifestyle choice comparable to Homosexuality and to deem it a protected lifestyle choice. This is a dangerous road to go down, not only is our society leading to more and more sexualization of younger and younger children, but are we to know say it is ok to have sexual relations with young children because it is just a "lifestyle" or "fetish"??? • That's appalling. Very bad idea. It's true, we're sexualizing children younger and younger. I'm truly disgusted at the thought of lowering the age of consent to thirteen.

  • Yup, then she says " "touching a 17-year-old's breast, kissing a 13-year-old, or putting one's hand up a 16-year-old's skirt" are not crimes comparable to gang rapes and murders and "anyone suggesting otherwise has lost touch with reality". Seriously?? Makes me think she like doing it also. Stupid bitch..

  • I don't know who wrote that article, but they're a flaming idiot. Jimmy Savile was a pedophile who died recently. He was a tv host, basically the UK's version of Dick Clark. He wasn't outed until after his death, and there's evidence the BBC knew about it, but covered it up (he was a BBC employee, working closely with children on many of their shows and charity drives).

There is another scandal going on, involving the real Deputy Speaker, who is not Jimmy Savile, is not dead, and is not a pedophile, but is gay. He's been accused of rape.by another grown man, but a lot of people believe it's political, rather than factual.

Neither of these cases has a damn thing to do with the behavior being described, and she's not talking about either man or either scandal. She may be an idiot, but considering how astoundingly incorrect everything else in that article is, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if that was out of context.

  • So basically, we're going back to saying that it's the victim's fault when anything bad happens to them because they should have taken steps to avoid the situation... That would be a gigantic leap backwards for womankind. The woman needs to have her head looked into.

  • The article was badly written making it hard to distinguish who she was talking about at which point in the article.... She seems to also be defending Stuart Hall: "The charges are that between 1 September 1974 and 31 December 1974 he indecently assaulted a woman who was then aged 16 or 17 years, that between 1 January 1983 and 31 December 1983 he indecently assaulted a girl then aged eight or nine years, and that between 1 July 1984 and 27 September 1984 he indecently assaulted a girl then aged 13 years. Doesn't go into more specifics(at least i haven't found any). Stuart Hall is another BBC host??
