Appropriate gift for a communion??

I am attending my first communion this weekend of my High School  friend's daughter. What is an appropriate gift? Is money ok? Or gift card? And how much? She is having a dinner afterwards at a restaurant.

Thank you!!!

  • Something religious or inspirational is appropriate for a communion. An inspirational book, a book of quotes, a journal with stationery and a bunch of colorful pens, a religious necklace, a framed religious picture, a bouquet of flowers, a religious music CD, baked desserts, a children's bible with pictures (my favorite as a kid). I wouldn't give money or a gift card because this kind of event should include something meaningful (and this is the only time you'll hear me say this about gift cards). A bookstore or a Christian store is your best place to find something appropriate.

  • I would call the church and ask if they know of a catholic gift shop in town. Then I would go there and look around. They are always very friendly and willing to help you find just the right thing.
I think a gift is better than a gift card at a first communion. Then they have something to remember that you were there and that you got to there for their special day. A money gift just doesn't have the same.

  • I am more of a gift person, though a gift card or money is always appreciated.I would avoid a bible or prayer book or a rosary. Often these are given by the church to the communicants. (not always though)

I would go to a Cathlic book store and get something there. A book or a keepsake would be very nice or a necklace.

  • A necklace or bracelet with a angel or cross is what I gave as a gift.

  • You probably won't have time to order now, but there are some beautiful religious gifts, such as wall hangings and personaized books, at You could always give a card and say the present is on its way.

  • I just remembered that my family traditionally gives a book about saints. There are some kid friendly ones that my kids loved.
