Have they changed the material that our paper currency is made of?

I was sitting in line at a drive thru coffee place the other day and had two bills, one was an older $5 and a newer $10 bill. I had to look two or three times to make sure the ten dollar bill wasn't counterfeit. The bill was thinner and felt more like paper, cheap, flimsy paper. It had the watermarks and security thread.

have they changed it? anyone know?
