How much can your 19 month old talk?

My 19 month old son doesn't talk a lot. I have counted about fifty words he can say. But most of the time he expresses things by screaming NO. He doesn't talk three or more words at a time. Nor will he tell me what he wants using the words he knows. Is he behind?

  • No, very child is SOOOO different. He'll catch up. They do what they want when they are ready. Does he make other sounds like when he is playing alone or have enthusiasm about things like seeing a bird or whatever outside? "Walk by one & talk by two" isn't always 100% correct. Give him some time.

  • when my DS was 19 months, he didnt talk much. when we went to the pedi for his 2 year check up, the dr was shocked how much he talked...for a boy. id ask your pedi about it, but typically boys dont talk as well or as much as girls at this age. girls just have the gift of gab from an early age haha.

  • He can carry a conversation with himself and others using baby gabber. Gets very excited when he sees things he likes and will point. I just read a lot of parents put that their child will tell them this or that and they aren't even two yet. They must be closer to being two then he is.

  • DS didn't even start talking till 18 months. I wouldn't worry about it yet. Every child is different so don't compare with other moms. :)

  • The rule of thumb is 3 words by 18 months, so your son is well ahead of the curve. I have 5 kids and my youngest started talking very early, but my 2nd was a very late talker (and he's now a straight A 7th grade honors student!)
