Do You Lock Your Dogs Up When Company Comes Over?

I'm just curious. I don't normally, especially when we are doing something outside like a cookout or something. My dogs are very well behaved and love spending time with the family and just scratch and whine when they are locked up. They are bigger dogs but they are good about staying out of the way and not getting into people's food. My family is pretty dog friendly and we don't mind each others dogs around. My mother leaves her dogs loose when it's just family but my sister doesn't because her dog isn't well behaved so he stays in the yard when company comes over. I have a collie, a redbone hound, a black lab, and a terrier/poodle cross.

  • It depends on who it is. People that my dog knows and likes, yes, we'll leave him running around. But if it's a stranger, or someone that my dog has made clear he doesn't like (rare, but there are a few), I keep him locked up. He's never bitten, but I figure it's better to lock him up in those cases, that way if he does bite, the person has to have done something to antagonize him (he's in a kennel), so they can't claim he just walked up and bit them. lol

  • We don't have dogs anymore, but we didn't lock our dog up when we had company. Pretty sure it would have broken her heart, since she was the most friendly dog ever.

  • I'm NOT a dog person, but unless a dog is going to be very badly behaved or poses a real threat, I wouldn't expect anyone to lock up their dog at their own home just because I'm visiting.

  • No but I sometimes i lock up my cat. I have one cat that loves when company comes over and won't leave them alone. She sometimes greets people by leaping at them.

  • Depends on if the person visiting has any sort of dog anxiety

  • I don't usually. I might if she starts to get really excited when we have company (like if there's a lot of people coming in the door at once), but usually she does really well. When the JW lady comes every week my dog will instantly run to the couch because she LOVES her, lol. She'll sit there and lay her head in her lap and just get loved on the whole visit.
