Are you a prepper or survivalist?

The recent tornado disaster got me thinking about building an underground disaster/bomb shelter stocked full of enough supplies to last 6 months to a year. I browsed a few sites and some people have really thought things out in detail. A lot of the info also seemed helpful as a first-aid resource when help can't reach you. I think a community can benefit from everyone knowing a bit more first-aid and survivalist skills.

Would you encourage your kids to learn this?

  • My ex is teaching our son to hunt. We both like being out in the woods so we have survival skills of a sort, but not for some disaster, just because we enjoy learning about those things.

  • No, I rarely even have more than a week's supply of groceries in my home.

  • No but I have a supply of food and water in the house to last a few days. The problem with prepping is you don't know what the disaster might be. Some people might have prepped for a disaster and the tornado came and its gone. If I lived in tornado ally I'd have some sort of storm shelter though, and I would only move to a school district that also had something.

  • I know CPR and basic first aid, but I don't go in for all that prepping stuff. Not that it's a bad idea, I guess, but if the world ever goes down that far, I hope I get killed in the first wave of hell that break loose. The TV shows I've seen have all been about guns and guarding your stores against intruders, and I don't think I'd do very well in a society like that.

  • No. I wouldn't last a week without a grocery store or gas station.
