  • Human gestation naturally occurs from 37-42 weeks. OB's pic "40 weeks" as some sort of happy medium. You can safely deliver a baby at 36 weeks, or 43 weeks as well. It really depends on the mother, and the baby, and if the due date's were right etc.

You aren't overdue until after 42 weeks, and you aren't considered premature until before 37.... but hospitals wont stop labor, usually, at 36 weeks etc. (true labor can't be stopped anyway though)

  • I gave birth at exactly 36 weeks, my water unexpectedly broke and I had to be induced. 40 weeks seems to be the goal though.

  • 40 weeks is the Average Gestation (most women will deliver between 38 and 42 weeks, 40 is the mid-point.)
First-time moms average about 8 additional days of gestation to the average 40 weks, also.

  • Depends on the baby...

I have one born at 39 weeks 6 days, one at 39 weeks to the day. Both of them were induced (large size they said)

My third came on his own at 36 weeks.

But that's how long it took for ME to have a baby.

  • 37-42 weeks is normal. anything befire that is premature and depending on your DR's beliefs they might not let you go past 40wks they'll induce @ 40 wks 1 day, but if you do make it to 42 almost always they induce you unless you go into labor right then and there by yourself.
