Why is the ocean blue

how come the ocean is blue why not purple??

    In effect, the ocean is not blue. The water simply reflects the color
    of the sky overhead (which appears to us as blue -- due to refraction
    of incoming light). Of course, ocean water contains much particulate
    matter, but this does not cause the "blue" color.

  • man i used to know tis, i know the sky is blue because of the way clean particles reflect off the ocean, and if you see a pretty sunset its reflecting off dirty particles meaning its pollution (i may have botched that up i took geography spring 07 i forget) maybe its the same the other way around?

  • because when the sun hits the water, all the other colors in the spectrum are soaked up, but the color blue is the only color that bounces back to your eye. that is how every thing is the color it is actually. (my dad told me this when I was 8)
