5 vaccines at one time safe??

My child needs his Kindergarten vaccines and they said he needs the polio, DTaP, MMR, Hep B and varicella. Is that normal to have that many at once? I am not anti vaxing but it just seems like a lot to be pumped into his little body at once. He has never had a reaction before but I don't think he's ever had that many at once. Is it safe? Will he 5 shots or do they combine?

  • He will be fine. I don't think they combine them but it is possible to have 2 nurses do them at the same time. It seemed to me that every time my kids got shots, they were multiple. I know it's hard. Been there, done that.

  • Can you go more than once over the summer?

  • Personally I would not do that many at once but it is common. I never did more than two at once and I didn't even like doing that. IF your child does react then you will have no idea which one they are reacting to and which one to avoid in the future. My son reacted violently to MMR and our doctor recommended not getting the second dose, but rather splitting it into separate components for the second dose. We would not have know that was the one he was reacting to if he had gotten 5 at a time.

  • My Ped does not recommend more than 2 at a time. I would space them out by at least 4 months.

  • I never did that many at one time, especially since some of those are already combined vaccines. I would space them out.
