Is it possible for a democracy to no longer exist in a country where it's existed for hundreds of years?

And I am referring to the U.S.  Do you think the United States is losing its democracy?

  • Is it possible? There are those in politics who are trying to find out.

Will it happen? I hope not, but so far, apathy seems to be carrying the day.

  • The US has never been a democracy. It's a republic.

  • I think there's quite a distance between where we are now and a dictatorship. I believe the government is becoming less responsive to the people, but that's a far cry from authoritarianism.

  • There are people attempting to turn it into a theocracy, but no, it is still very much a democratic republic ;)

  • The US has always been a democratic republic and NO it is not losing that just because YOU don't like things now. That's a personal issue not a governmental one.

  • there are those (both parties) who wish it was and that they were the dictator. but that will never happen. there are far too many ppl with various beliefs that are paranoid about anyone outside themselves being in power. if a Hitler or Stalin type tried to become dictator there would be a whole section of the populous up in arms and flipping out.

i mean, Obama cant fart without the entire Right giving him the business. it took Hitler at least 15 years to gain total power and he had to kill a lot of naysayers in the process...he also had a vast majority behind him. no politician has that today. so democratic republic we stay.

  • I think our country isn't as great as it could be because so many do want a nanny government. I don't think we are even close to a dictatorship but that can change quickly we only have to look at history to see that.
