Is it normal for my 4 1/2 month old daughter to sleep longer than 10 hours everynight?

I usually put her to bed around 10 p.m., and she never wakes up before 8:00 a.m. Mostly its around 8:30 ish, but sometimes she sleeps until 10:00! I have been waking her up recently around 8:00 because it just doesnt feel right to me that she doesnt eat anything for that long? Or should I just let her sleep? My mom says she'll wake up if shes hungry, but, I dont wake up when Im hungry... she never wakes up crying either, she wakes up very slowly, first rolls around, then finally opens her eyes, then plays and coos for about an hour, then I feed her when she starts getting loud. Am I doing things right? What have you done?

  • I have read that sleeping is just as important as eating at this age. Let her sleep!! My daughter (7m) sleeps about that also and has been since around 4 or 5 months, can't quite remember.

  • it sounds fine.As long as she gains weight I wouldnt worry.Sometimes mama needs sleep too.I'd say its ok to let her sleep in sometime.

  • My policy is to never wake a sleeping baby (over one month). My daughter slept 12 hours a night at that age and is 10 mo. now and is still sleeping 11 hours each night. There were a few nights where she slept 15-16 hours. As long as she is gaining weight, she is fine.

  • my DD slept 12 hours solid from 3 months. she goes to bed btw 7-8pm & never wakes up before 7am. then i feed her & she goes back to sleep till 9-10 am. if she doesnt get those last 2 hours she is cranky. it use to worry me, but my pedi told me to just appreciate it, so i now i love it.

some babies just need more sleep.

  • If she is gaining, meeting milestones, and has wet and poopy diapers then it may just be the way she is. If you are not sure about the first two take her in for an evaluation.

  • Wow. I wish mine would do that lol. I agree never wake a sleeping baby. There little body's are different then ours. Yes we dont wake when we are hungry but there body's are trained to at that age.I can promise if she is hungry she will wake up. I would just left her sleep. If she is gaining weight and is doing all the things she should at this age. I wouldnt worry about it and knock on some wood and hope it continues. My DS only sleeps through the night every now and then. He's 6 months old. so be thankful

  • Thst's great that she is sleeping that long. I like to keep my baby on a schedule so if he sleeps longer than usuall i will let him, but if he sleeps too long i will wake him up and feed him just so that his schedule doesn't get messed up. She could also be inbetween growth spurts to where she doesn't need to eat as much now?
