  • Raw vegies are the best hard boiled eggs.
Is he taking medication other than insulin, if he is you may need to ask mom.
You also did not mention his age.

  • Trail mix is great, you can make melon balls and you can stick them with toothpicks, cucumbers with a bit of ranch dressing to dress it some. Also frozen grapes are good, especially for the summer time. But also remember different foods affect blood sugar in different ways. Foods high in carbohydrates raise blood sugar quicker than other foods. But also ask his mom to make sure nothing he cannot eat at all. Its a myth that diabetics cannot eat the same things we do. Just have to balance the foods he eats with the correct amount of insulin.
    FYI...My husband is diabetic.

  • I would suggest asking his parents what they keep on hand. I hope you are going to get some training. It will make things much less stressful on you both. My son is 8 and he eats like a typical kid. We keep granola bars on hand for when we are on the go. The 100 calorie packs of crackers also work well on the go. We usually keep apples around because they are easy on his blood sugar. Baby carrots and hummus or ranch. Sugar free jello with a small abount of cool whip is basically a free snack. Sugar free pudding mixed with cool whip makes a big serving for a growing boy. What he chooses will really depend on if he takes his insulin with shots or with an insulin pump. He may not want a carb snack in the afternoon to keep from having to have another shot. We also use a kitchen scale to weigh out crackers, cereal, fruit, etc.
