Ideas of where a teen could make friends?

My stepson will be at our house off and on all summer. He doesn't go to school in the town where we live, so his usual friends aren't here. Most of the kids in the condo complex are a lot younger than he is. There are a couple of boys his age, but now their dad has moved to another house and only their grandma lives here, so they aren't around as much as they were last year. He's started to mope around and wish he had friends his own age, which I don't blame him for, so I'm trying to come up with some ideas of where he could go to meet other teens. There used to be a skate park, but it's been torn down. The library is too far. So where do your teens usually hang out?

  • Is there a day camp there? YMCA center? Arts, music, and recreational classes he could take? Fishing, boating? Some schools offer science workshops and week long camps. Look up teen events around your city. Know any families with kids his age through a church? Invite the family over for a BBQ first so the kids can get acquainted. Maybe let him learn how to play an instrument at a kids music class. Area colleges and schools usually have summer kids workshops. Volunteering also lets you meet more people who might have kids his age. Teens also tend to hang out at the mall and movie theaters

  • Not know where you are I have a hard time coming up with ideas for you... I would look up community center events and low cost social clubs. You may find a science or chess club for summer.

  • How about a youth group at the local church! Our teens do a lot of fun stuff and community service too!

  • Hmmm... that's tough... what is he into? What sort of things does he like to do?

  • That's part of the problem. He likes origami, making paper airplanes, models, jigsaw puzzles. Science and astronomy. Riding bikes. Fairly solitary activities. He's in chess club at school during the year. He likes movies. But he's not really into team sports.
