  • "Different kind of sodium!"

Yes, but it's a worse one! But hey, one indulgence per customer, right?

I have a couple of sauces I make myself: a quick one with either chopped fresh or petite diced canned tomatoes, olive oil, garlic and basil sautéed over the stove top; a pesto of garlic, basil and olive oil that I mix in the blender; or a slow-cooked one with tomato puree, ground beef and Italian sausage.

But we also use some jarred. Classico, Bertolli and Newmans are the brands that we've preferred. Many of the others are simply too sweet.

  • I only make my own. It is so simple and I make a huge batch and divvy it up into meal size portions and freeze it.

  • My own. I can't stand the weak flavor of processed sauces.

  • and when feeding more than 2 people i fail to see how one jar is affordable

i feed a family of 4 on one jar, and actually have half a jar left for the next time we have pasta. unless i'm doing spaghetti & meatballs, then i pour the whole jar into a stockpot and let the meatballs simmer in them all day, but then still, we dont eat all the sauce that day so the rest goes in the freezer and i get another meal out of it later.

as far as the flavor, i add spices/seasonings to it, and sometimes a few basil leaves or what not.

  • I prefer Ragout, either the mushroom one or the sweet basil. But I'll buy whatever's on sale.

  • Francesco Rinaldo TOBE Healthy is the only jarred sauce I use. It is fortified with omega 3s, reduced sodium. It's fantastic too.

  • I like Emeril's vodka cream sauce, but most of the time I make my own red sauce, it is really just almost as easy as opening a jar.

  • The absolute best sauce ever is Dave's Organic, but it's hard to find. If it's not that, I don't really care one way or the other.
