Math Picnic

I ran across this idea somewhere and finally got around to trying it with much better success than I anticipated. So I thought I'd share it for those of you with little ones. My daughter and I had a math picnic for lunch.

I packed finger foods--cheese cubes and crackers, Cheerios, orange slices, strawberries, etc--in plastic baggies. Then as we ate, I made up simple math problems.

"I have four Cheerios. A cereal monster came and ate two. How many are left?"

"You have two orange slices. Then I give you one more. How many do you have now?"

"You ate two strawberries. Then you ate three orange slices. How many pieces of fruit did you eat in all?"

My daughter loved it. I may do a few more over the next month so she's more ready for kindergarten.
