How do I ask for time off

My daughter just had her baby on the 29th,and my friend just called me and told me her dad died.
I've been too busy with my new grandchild to stop over at my friends house.
I've been with the company for a year and three months, but I'm scared to ask management for another day off.
What should I do?

  • You taking paid days off in August should have no bearing on you needing an extra day off now. However to be diplomatic I would say:

'____, I know this is last minute but a good friend of mine has lost her father. I would like attend the funeral. Would it be possible to have _____ off. I understand I already have a few vacation days off in August and I do not want to put you in a bind but I feel like I need to be there for her right now. Would that be okay?'

The worst that can happen is they say 'no, it's not possible at this time.' To which you say 'Well, Thank you for considering it.' and then you send flowers.

  • Why would you ask for time off to go see your friend who is only 30 min from you? You don't need to be gone all day.
