S/O PMS if a medication is past its date can it me dangerous to take or

does it only lose potency?

  • I'm obviously not PMS but my pharmacists and doctors have always told me that the meds just loose potency. that is shelf stable meds not refrigerated meds.

  • Usually an expired med should be tossed after the ex. date b/c it may have lost it potency... BUT there are medications that can undergo a change in chemical composition as well, depending how long it is after the expiration date.

  • Here's a good example for you Dard.
    If a pharmacist mixes an antibiotic, say amoxicillin for a baby/child, it lasts 10 days. After that period of time it's no good. Time to toss it.
    If it's something like Percocet or Cyclobenzaprine, it just loses it's potency.

  • Right... or something like a topical cream... the indigence start break down after a while and they can actually cause a rash (or chemical burn)...
