Is there an easy trick to getting the pits out of cherries?

I have a bunch of cherries from a cherry tree that I want to make something with but they all have pits. I was thinking about making a cherry sauce to serve over cheesecake.

  • We bought a pitter like this one. It does six at a time. I did 8lbs in about 45 minutes. That would have taken forever if I had done them indiviually.

We got it at walmart and it cost $12.

  • I was just looking at a recipe that called or a lot of cherries so I looked up "cherry pitter tool". Some of them seem very over priced especially if you will not be using it a lot. Here are some from Target that seem somewhat reasonable if you will be using it on a regular basis- http://www.target.com/s/cherry+pitters?ref=tgt_adv_XS000000&AFID=msn&CPNG=kitchen_corers+peelers&adgroup=cherry+stoner&LNM=cherry%20pitters&MT=broad&LID=26p2961077&KID=57608623-8f7d-b268-8218-000023f60c64
