Can planes land during a lightning storm?

I am supposed to pick up my friend from the airport. They delayed her flight three times. She texted me that they were finally boarding. That was almost two hours ago. The flight should only take less than an hour. It is raining with thunder and lightning like crazy. I am wondering if they rerouted her plane.

She was originally scheduled to be here at 11pm... but it is now almost 2am.

  • They probably rerouted her. Planes don't generally even try to land when there is serious lightning. Hope all is well.

  • She finally landed. She said that she texted me when they boarded the plane and that they sat on the tarmac for an hour before they even started moving.

I feel really bad for her. She got on the first plane at 5am and didn't reach home until 3am. 22 hours of traveling.... and on top of all of that... they lost her luggage!
