Crepe Myrtle

I have a large (25 foot) crepe myrtle that blooms late. The crepe myrtle is very common in Southern Delaware so I see them everywhere. But I've noticed over the last few years as mine had grown larger that the smaller ones bloom in late June early July, but mine is only just now stating to bloom and it's rather sporadic, a bloom here and bloom there. It will eventually bloom completely, and it does seed because I've got a brand new crepe myrtle that sprouted and bloomed this year and it's the same color, so I'm not worried about it. I'm just curious if anyone else has seen this happen with their crepe myrtle and if you know why.

  • Are you cutting it back/stripping it at the end of the blooming season?

  • Huh, I had no idea I was supposed to prune it. I will add that to my winter to-do list. Thanks.
