Speaking of accents ...

I was intrigued by Josie's question about accents, particularly that as far as Americans go, Southern and New York accents were frequently mentioned. Do you think Americans in other parts of the country besides New England and the South have accents?

  • I think Texans sound weird with their y'all
They think I sound weird because I talk like I'm from Chicago
When I lived in Virginia it drove me bar guano crazy that they said Nawwfuk or Narrrfuk instead of Norfolk
It also drives me crazy that I live in Bexar county which to me should be said Bekkkk-sar but they say Bear. There's a fuggin x in the middle.

  • I've been told that I have an accent. I live in Seattle. *I* don't think I have one, but someone for somewhere else in the nation/world might think I do.

I know I unconsciously mimic any accents I hear after about an hour of chatting. I lived in Germany for 2 years, and EVERYONE would ask me where I was from for several years after I came home again. *I* didn't think I sounded any different, but people kept telling me I had a European accent.

  • I get boston a lot..and Jersey...Never really lived either place. Spent a total of about 8 years in Germany as a kid and the rest in Tx. Had an "accent' all my life. Very few people pick up that it's European mixed with "something else" then again most people giving me "Jersey or Boston" have never been outside the US.
