What can happen if a UTI is left untreated?

I don't know the answer, but I'm assuming the consequences can be bad. I'm hoping our FB friend reads this.

  • I had a UTI begin son a saturday, I was treating at home but thought Stupidly I guess, that I could wait until Monday to see the doctor. I had gotten them a few times before and wasn't too huge of a deal.

I ended up in the ER on Sunday because I was in immense pain, it had began to spread to my kidneys. The pain was one of the worst I have personally had...I can't imagine my child going through that. Even just the pain of the UTI itself is sometimes unbearable.

I just saw the other question, I'm praying that girl is safe and gets the help that is needed.

  • I'm thinking her particular issues go deeper than just a UTI, unfortunately Ballad. Judging from the stupidity of her post, that poor child might be in danger....

    Complications of UTIs may include:

    • Recurrent infections, especially in women who experience three or more UTIs

    • Permanent kidney damage from an acute or chronic kidney infection (pyelonephritis) due to an untreated UTI, especially in young children

    • Increased risk of women delivering low birth weight or premature infants

  • I'm fairly certain that permament kidney damage is at least one of the potential consequences of untreated UTIs. But I agree with m-avi that the UTI is the least of that poor child's problems right now, and that's pretty damn sad.
